Return

Each fall, Kokanee enter the final passage of their lives, their silver bodies transformed to crimson as they gather to spawn. A freshwater form of sockeye salmon, they never make the journey to the sea, yet they carry the same ancient urgency of return.

Seen from above, the scene becomes pure pattern. Scarlet forms drift and turn over stone, appearing and disappearing beneath the surface as water bends light around them. Individual fish give way to rhythm, colour, and movement.

That transformation is what held me there. For a brief time, the creek seemed less like a landscape and more like a living composition, restless, luminous, and entirely wild.
